About Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC)

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has dedicated itself to developing the strength, health, confidence and leadership of Warlpiri youth since 1993. The program aims to promote positive and meaningful future pathways for all young Warlpiri people.

The notable and sustainable success of the program has been firmly based on the strength of Warlpiri youth, families and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff. The program was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee.

The WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, however, WYDAC is comprised of a variety of programs operating at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu and Mt Theo Outstation. WYDAC also have an office located in Alice Springs. There are over 70 staff across the entire organisation with more than half of these being Warlpiri people.

About the Opportunities 

The Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) are currently seeking Counsellors and Social Workers to join their Warra Warra Kanyi - Counselling and Case Management teams based in either Yuendumu, Lajamanu or Willowra in the Northern Territory.

Reporting to the WWK Coordinator and working as part of a supportive team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, your primary responsibility will be to provide high quality, effective and culturally appropriate counselling and case management for Warlpiri young people. You will work closely with Warlpiri colleagues and with the WWK Coordinator to ensure that practice approach reflects and upholds WYDAC’s values, and is congruent with the WWK program logic.

Some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Ensuring that young people are responded to in a timely and compassionate manner;
  • Contextualising/adapting your practice in order to provide high quality, relevant case management, and/or counselling support to Warlpiri young people;
  • Providing court support to young people attending bush court – these young people may not be direct clients of WWK, however, will require support and advocacy on court sitting days;
  • Efficient management of administrative duties, including maintaining up to date file notes, case management plans, risk assessments etc; and
  • Ensuring that social work/counselling/case management practice is operating within National and NT legislation, particularly as it relates to mandatory reporting requirements.

About You

To be considered, you will have:

  • A qualification in Counselling, Social work or equivalent;
  • Accredited membership with an appropriate body;
  • Previous experience working with young people and at-risk youth;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team;
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and maintenance of client notes; and
  • An open 'C' class driver's license.

Your demonstrated capacity for resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision-making will be pivotal to your success, as will your exceptional communication and negotiation skills, including your ability to manage external relationships effectively.

An understanding and experience in working within cross-cultural environments and community development, preferably in a remote indigenous context, and a knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture including the issues affecting remote Aboriginal people, will be highly regarded.

A Criminal History Check and Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card) will be required prior to commencement. Additionally, you'll require a strong level of computer literacy.
